OPI nail polish

I am a nail polish brand snob, I only use and like OPI, Revlon, and Essie.  The paint goes on evenly, holds up under daily abuse, and has fun color selection.

Score for me!  6 OPI nail polish for only $18!  From My Style pinboard comes James Bond OPI collection.  Two of the six polishes came from the Bond collection, one from the out of production Amazing SpiderMan collection, and the other three are their normal collection line.  I was so excited for the Goldeneye color, I already put it on my toes!

Colors:
Die another day, Color to diner for, Goldeneye, Number one nemesis, Too hot pink to hold 'em, and Lucerne-tainly look marvelous.

DIY Liquid Dishwashing Detergent - A Bust!

From my Homemade or Natural Remedies pinboard, comes a bust!  One thing's for sure, my family is really tolerant of all my pin activities.  I tried DIY Liquid Dishwashing Detergent, it was a large amount of ingredients, so I cut down the recipe by 4, so I mixed:
1 Cup Liquid Castile soap
1/4 Cup White Vinegar
1/4 Cup Water
1/4 Tbs. lemon juice (3/4 tsp.)
1/4 tsp. tea tree oil

It was placed in a squeeze bottle and used like regular store bought detergent.

Ick!  This was a bust!  I don't like a waxy film, so I ran it again with with my store bought detergent and it was covered covered in a powdery film.

Tuesday, February 26 - Homemade Fabric Softener

From my Homemade or Natural Remedies pinboard comes: DIY Fabric Softener!  Ta da!
I feel in love with fabric softener while on my trip to California, but spending $7 on average for a bottle isn't something I'm cool with, so I spent...97 cents and made over 3 Liters!

1 small bottle of cheap-o hair conditioner - 15/16oz.
6 Cups hot water
3 Cups vinegar

Mix hot water and conditioner until smooth, then add vinegar.  Pour into a bottle and use 2 Tablespoons with each wash!  I can't wait to try it tomorrow!

Monday, February 25 - Parenting when it's Difficult

Tonight my pin comes from my Parenting pinboard.  No one, no one, after having a week's vacation including Disneyland with two kids can be up on their toes after pulling in at 1am.  This is how I felt:
'nuf said.

Sunday, February 24 - Car Trip Bags for Kid's road trips

Car trip bags for Disneyland from my Family and Kid Activities pinboard really helped on my car trip.  I drove from Utah to California with a 3 year old sitting next to my 10 month old baby without 1 video played and no hysterics!  Each kid had her own bag filled with: books that make noise, stuffed animals, small toys, and a few new items purchased from Dollar Tree.  Also, a diaper bag, filled with age appropriate snacks and drinks in between seats.  About every hour a new item was procured and potty breaks were frequent, but all in all, we made good time and it was considered the easiest road trip as a family we've had!

Saturday, February 23 - U-Pick Orange Grove in Southern California

So, I grew up in Southern California, and I actually was there when orange groves were around.  My great grandfather and great-great grandfather were involved with the orange groves, lighting oil smudge-pots during frosts, packing oranges for the trains.  I was so excited that on this trip, I was able to take my family back to my hometown to pick oranges!  Papa, auntie, and my grandmother came and we had a blast!

On Pinterest, there wasn't any U-pick Southern California orange groves, so while my pin, U-Pick Orange Grove near DisneyWorld, Florida, is related, my activity source is original.  This is the link to all the information about the grove and the group that preserves the 1 1/2 acre ranch and home: laverneheritage.org.  $5 a bag!

Friday, February 22 - Adult places to eat at in Disneyland

From my Family and Kid Activities pinboard, I used this pin 12 Best Things to Eat at Disneyland and picked out the more "adult" things to eat.  Hopefully you can try them out for yourself and let me know!

  1. Beignets - sold in New Orleans Square at the Cafe Orleans or at the Mint Julep Bar
  2. Corn dog - from the Red Cart off of Main Street, with apple slices
  3. Chicken Fried Chicken - from the Carnation Cafe, this is oh, so yummy!
  4. Cheeseburger with Roasted green Poblano Chiles - from the Carnation Cafe, yum.
  5. The Monte Cristo Sandwich - from the Blue Bayou (make reservations for Blue Bayou way in advance!) and Cafe Orleans - order one to split between at least 2 people (hint: if you just ask for a separate plate you won't get charged $4 for the kitchen to split your meal and add additional fruit!)
  6. Bengal Barbecue - across from Indiana Jones, the skewers are great for eating while walking.

**The next time I go I want to try eating at: Rancho del Zocalo and Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue, both places had rave reviews!**

Thursday, February 21 - Disneyland Autographed Signature Photo Frame

From Family and Kid Activities pinboard, comes Autographed Signature Photo Frame.  We spent all day meeting Disneyland characters and had a blast!  This will make a wonderful family memory.  I bought a 8x10 mat for a 5x7 photo from Michaels and had a few different colored Sharpie markers at home for signatures.

Wednesday, February 20 - Uses of Coconut Oil, Face Moisturizer

Using Coconut Oil for Daily Moisturizer  comes from my Homemade or Natural Remedies pinboard.  I used coconut oil as daily moisturizer for a month, and I decided to keep using it with my Pond's cream.  I was worried that at night it rubs off on my pillowcase, but it seems fine.  I only use about a quarter-sized amount of the oil.

Tuesday, February 19 - Preschool Conversation Starters

From my Parenting pinboard, I used Preschool Conversation Starters with my 3 year old, because honestly, sometimes I feel like all I do is boss her around.  This is also a great way to help to encourage creativity, and I was surprised at what she had to say.  The answers I got are going in my Memory Jar.

Monday, February 18 - BB Cream

From  My Style pinboard, comes Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream.  I did some tons of research on "Beauty Balm" cream, and this one was the top contender for me for a few reasons: it's cheap, good for young (under 35) skin, and it's light coverage, and it has sunscreen.

I found a few perks to this BB cream: I couldn't feel it on my skin, it blurred my pores (the ones on the sides of my cheek bones) better than Porefessional by Benefit, the sunscreen held up during my week on vacation in California.

Sunday, February 17 - How to freeze tomatoes & How to start an avocado plant

From my For the Home pinboard, comes Freezing Tomatoes.
  1. Remove stems
  2. Wash each tomato individually, I recommend a orange vinegar spray, I did.
  3. Hand dry each tomato, twice and place in freezer safe baggie.
  4. Suck out all the air you can before sealing the bag shut.
  5. Double bag the tomatoes before popping in the freezer.
These tomatoes are best for cooked dishes.  They can be peeled, diced, chopped, and smashed - do this while frozen.  When the tomatoes come back to room temperature, the texture is slightly changed.

From my Family and Kid Activities pinboardHow to Start an Avocado Plant.  Very handy, since avocado pits are in abundance with all the Freezing avocados I've been doing.
  1. Remove pit from fruit
  2. Wash
  3. Poke with toothpicks to make pit hover in center of glass of water (pointy side up)
  4. Keep in warm, sunny spot with plenty of water.

Uses of Coconut Oil: Hair, Part One: Moisturizing Mask

I'm taking a quick break from 18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses, I'm tired of cleaning.

I needed a little pampering after cleaning up after a little sickie.

My hair is long, super long for me - to my elbows.  I hate having to take care of it (not for much longer!), it's dry and damaged and gets caught on everything.  I have tried a few things by myself and haven't had very good success.  I one time tried a mayonnaise mask, but didn't realize that you need to shampoo after putting it in your hair, so I ran around with oily stinky hair for a day.  Ick.  So trying a Coconut Oil Hair Mask wasn't too exciting, but I found it wasn't nearly as bad as mayonnaise and my hair felt nice afterwards.

How to have a Coconut Oil Hair Mask:
On dry hair, massage in 2 handfuls of coconut oil into hair, starting at where you would put in a ponytail.  Leave in for at least 10 minutes, then shampoo and condition as usual.

Natural Lysol disinfectant, How to Clean Vomit, and 18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses: #8 Hot Towel Massage

We've had some sickies lately at our house.  It's been awesome to say the least.  With lots of fabric surfaces that can't go in the washing machine I've had to research a few cleaning methods.  Here are some helpful was to keep your house healthy.

#1 - Natural Lysol disinfectant.  Okay, remember the commercial for Lysol?  The one in which the mom sprays everything from toys to the telephone?  What isn't shown (and is right now being petitioned) is that you are supposed to wash whatever you spray with Lysol after it dries!  The reside has bad chemicals and shouldn't be in contact with, especially for small children and pets.  So Lysol isn't an option for spraying down couches in our home, but this safe alternative worked perfectly!  Tea Tree oil is a natural disinfectant and is very cost effective.

Natural Lysol disinfectant:
10 drops Tea Tree oil
1 1/2 Cups warm filtered or distilled water

Put in spray bottle, preferably a mister, and shake before use!

#2 - How to Clean Vomit.  Ick, but necessary.

Make a paste of baking soda, OXYclean, and water.  Think thin frosting.  Clean up what vomit you can, then smear this paste very thick on all fabric and carpet as needed.  Let dry overnight or until it's powdery again.  Vacuum up, repeat if necessary.  Use leftover paste in the laundry.

#3 - 18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses: #8 Hot Towel Massage.  How could this not be nice?  Hot, damp towel with castile soapy water slowly rubbed towards the heart.  The soap left a nice scent, and the castile soap left no reside or feeling the need to rinse off afterwards.

Valentine's Day Card, How to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh, and 18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses: #7 Bathtime

Happy Valentine's Day!

Every year I *help* my daughters make a special card for their daddy to give to him for Valentine's day.  This year's card came from my Holiday Crafts pinboard.  The Sign Language "I love you" card was just right for a 3 year old with a 10 month old helper.  This was quick!    First, trace hands; second, cut them out.  Glue in place, then bend down and glue the middle and ring fingers to form "I love you" in sign.

My next pin comes from my Homemade or Natural Remedies pinboard, this one is really handy, especially on Valentine's day!  10 surprising uses of sugar: #1 keep cut flowers fresh was a much better alternative to the little packet of chemicals my lovely roses came with.  To keep cut flowers fresh: cut stems at an angle, remove leaves and damaged petals, add 3 teaspoons sugar and 2 Tablespoons white vinegar to vase, and use room temperature water.

And finally, continuing in my Liquid Castile Soap series, 18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses: #7 Bathtime. I added 3 squirts of Dr. Bronner's soap into a warm tub for my two kiddos for a test.  It was a nice water softener and it didn't seem to have any negative effects while the splash war raged.  Impressed, but bubble bath is still king in the tub for both kiddos baths and mommy baths.

Homemade Shower and Tub Spray & 18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses: #6 Washing Wool

Both of my pins came from my Homemade or Natural Remedies pinboard.

My Homemade Shower and Tub Spray was desperately needed after my using coconut oil as shaving cream, I had scrubbed my tub for an eternity to get it livable again and I vowed never to waste that much time and cleaner again!  Now, after each shower or bath the Mister and I do a quick spritz of this cleaner and leave it on until the next person uses the tub and they rinse it off while adjusting to the right water temperature.  It is so nice!  I've been doing this for a week already and haven't needed to scrub the tub yet!  Yahoo!
Almost time to make more!

Homemade Shower and Tub Spray

Equal parts BLUE Dawn dish soap and White Vinegar

Heat the vinegar, then add the Dawn, and swirl to mix.

To use daily:
Spritz down light layer over tub, tub walls, and doors/curtain.  Rinse off with next shower!

To use for weekly scrub:
Spray over everything, let sit 1-2 hours and then wipe off with damp towel.

*** You can heat vinegar in microwave, or like a baby bottle, in a container of hot water.  Vinegar must be heated to incorporate the Dawn dish soap!***

I've been going strong on my 18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses, and today I used it for washing wool.  For wool articles I've used Woolite then laid them flat to dry, it's worked so far, but Woolite is kind of pricey and I'm out of it, so I decided to give a go!

This is the lovely antique sweater that was lovingly made for my dad.
It needed to be cleaned for baby girl #2.  This is how I washed it:

1.  Fill clean bathroom sink with cool water and a dash of soap.
2.  Gently hand wash, don't twist.
3.  Rinse until cool water.  I rinsed until no color remained.
4.  On a laid out towel, lay flat clothing re-shaped.
5.  Roll up like a jelly roll, and press out excess water.
6.  Lay flat to dry on a dry towel.

Mexican Stuffed Shells and 18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses: #4 Shave Soap & #5 Tooth Soap

First pin, Mexican Stuffed Shells from my New Recipes to Try pinboard was a hit!  A great twist on a traditionally italian dish.  I found my filling just a tad too liquidly, so I adjusted the recipe.  Enjoy!

Mexican Stuffed Shells
Adapted from busy-at-home.com
4 cups chicken breast, cooked and chopped
1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
       6 green onions, diced
2 whole bell peppers of your choice, diced
3 (8 oz.) blocks cream cheese, softened (not melted)
2 cans diced tomatoes with chiles (don’t drain)
       1 tsp cumin
1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
       1 cup of salsa
large pasta shells, cooked al dente
1.           Cook pasta shells in well salted, boiling water until al dente
2.           To make the filling, mix diced chicken, drained black beans, green onions, diced peppers, and cumin in a large mixing bowl. Thoroughly incorporate all the ingredients.
3.           In a separate bowl, mix the cream cheese and undrained tomatoes with chiles. When thoroughly combined, pour it over the chicken mixture and mix well. Spread 3/4 c. salsa in the bottom of a large baking pan. Reserve the final 1/4 cup, for later.
4.           Using a spoon, or your fingers, fill each of your cooked and cooled pasta shells, setting them into the salsa covered pan. Continue until all shells are filled and arranged in the pan.
5.           When the pan is full, drizzle the shells with the remaining 1/4 cup of salsa and then sprinkle with the shredded cheddar cheese.  Cover the baking pan tightly with foil and bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until hot and bubbly.

My other pins are continuing my 18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses.  I've done laundry soapshampoo, and body wash.  Today I tried using liquid castile soap for shave soap and tooth soap.

For shaving, I only used 2 drops of soap per leg and it lathered up nicely and worked just like shaving with a bar of soap.  Whoohoo for shaving with soap.  I wouldn't recommend it unless you like shaving with soap, or are camping, or something like that.

For tooth soap I used barely a drop on my toothbrush and brushed as usual.  My teeth felt clean, but I have the almond soap and I couldn't get over the soap linger in my mouth, which lasted about 20 minutes.  My girlfriend Alexis recommends the peppermint soap if you have to brush your teeth with it.  I say, just chew gum or rinse with minty mouthwash afterwards.  After researching on-line, apparently many people with sensitive teeth use Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap for brushing their teeth since it doesn't have any abrasive ingredients.  I received a concern about the lack of fluoride if you use this soap over a long term period of time, never fear!  If you choose to use this soap for brushing your teeth and are using public works water in the US, you will still be getting enough fluoride on your teeth, and if you are very good and actually go to your dentist twice a year, you'll be in great shape!  Well water or water from countries other than the US don't necessarily have fluoride, but fluoride can be found in bottled water, if you are on a trip and this is the route you want to go.

18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses: #3 Body Wash

I'm going strong, 3 uses of soap in a row!  I'm trying not to get sidetracked with all the other pins I've been seeing for Valentine's Day or Disneyland.

Today's pin was liquid castile soap use #3 body wash.  I have to say, I'm really impressed with this soap!  It took  15 drops of soap to wash off in the shower!  It lathered well and washed off quickly.  There wasn't any scent left by the time I toweled off.  Castile soap feels different when you rinse off than traditional soap and I noticed that when I toweled off my skin didn't need as much lotion as usual.  Plus, it has a natural deodorant properties, so it helps you not stink so much!  So nice for after Zumba!

18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses: #2 Shampoo

Yesterday was the start of my 18 Uses for Castile Soap.  I figure it's best to go through all 18 in a row so I don't get sidetracked.

Today is shampoo day!  Yay!  I generally shampoo only every 2-3 days, my hair is long and has a grown out perm and takes too much time to deal with, plus living out in Utah dries out my hair considerably.  I am picky about my shampoo and conditioner, so when I read on my Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap pin that one of the 18 uses is shampoo, I cringed.  (I also saw it used for toothpaste, not looking forward to that one!)

Like with the Liquid Castile Laundry Soap recipe, there are a ton of concoctions on Pinterest.  I went on the companies website and the shampoo instructions were vague, "dilute and use".  Hmmm.  1/4 C. of soap washed an entire load of towels, so how much of this did I want on my hair?  Yes, it's all natural and biodegradable, but still.  So I guessed small, and made a 1:3 ratio of soap to water shampoo.

It looked like water and I poured the whole amount on my head at once, so's not to have any drip-age.  Smelled great, and lathered up nicely - not store bought nicely, but still nice.  The biggest difference came with rinsing it out, it rinsed out very quickly, I couldn't believe it.  Usually with shampoo you have to rinse out the lather for like a minute or two, but this took 15 seconds, maybe.  Time saving in the shower could be very useful...

After shampooing, I conditioned and styled my hair as usual and noticed no difference in how it behaved.

Reading on-line, many sites recommend using liquid castile soap for camping because you use it for everything from body to dishes without hurting the environment.  I will have to remember that for this summer!

18 Liquid Castile Soap Uses: #1 Laundry Soap

I use castile soap in bar form in the shower and I really like it, but I thought that that's all there was to it.  Boy, was I wrong!  Pinterest is definitely for the thrifty, crafty, or bored, because while looking up pins for my Homemade or Natural Remedies pinboard I kept coming across this need for liquid castile soap in all sorts of  house cleaning and beauty up-keeping in true granola style; my searching lead me to think that this was the one-cure-all like coconut oil.  Turns out, they're related.

So after comparing 5 brands via the internet, I pinned Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soap as the winner.  The label is just a mess, but  when comparing brands this one was the real deal - especially with the unscented baby formula, this was the ONLY brand that actually was unscented!  I could read in the labels from other companies where fragrance was added!  Plus, this company has a great website and user fan base filled with great ways to use this soap.

The label claims 18 uses, so I am going to find and try 18 different uses.  So today was use #1, laundry soap.  I found a couple different recipes and instructions on Pinterest for using liquid castile as laundry soap, but I went with the instructions on the actual company website: 1/4 C. soap and a dash of baking soda.  I tried it out on towels, because I figured that if anything went wrong they were the least likely to get ruined.  I poured the soap and soda directly on top of my load, not in my h.e. washing machine detergent slot, and ran it.  My towels turned out very nice and soft, as if I had put in fabric softener, which I never do.  The Mister and I tested them, both for hand drying and body drying, they were great!  Plus, even though I bought the Almond scented soap, my towels didn't smell really like anything other than just being fresh!

I liked this and am going to try experimenting with other castile laundry soap recipes from Pinterest!

Homemade Drain Cleaner - a bust!

My pin tonight comes from my Homemade or Natural Remedies pinboard, and unfortunately, it was a bust.  Homemade Drain Cleaner, made from just baking soda and vinegar didn't have the cleaning power needed to unclog my bathtub drain from using Coconut Oil as shaving cream which was horribly sticky inside my tub as well as the pipes it seems.  This pin did seem to help a little in my kitchen sink, but not enough to keep dumping 1/2 C. of baking soda down my drain!  I will be buying some Drain-O tomorrow!

How to Freeze Avocados & Frozen Yogurt Covered Strawberries

This post really is for Thursday, Feb. 7th - I just couldn't get to my laptop any sooner.

My first pin, How to Freeze Avocados, comes from my For the Home pinboard.  When avocados go on sale, buy a bunch, store them in your pantry until they are ripe, they will give slightly under pressure, and then freeze them for later.  I got mine for 25 cents each, gotta love the latin markets!  I use them for fresh baby food, and when the dolly is done with avocado flavor, I freeze any remaining for later.  It's easy: wash and cut the avocado in half lengthwise, remove pit, wrap in plastic wrap, and put in a freezer bag.  They last in the freezer up to 6 months.  If you are picky about the bright green color, treat your avocado with lemon juice before wrapping and freezing.

***Note:  with freezing food, unless it is a thick glass or plastic container, always have at least 2 layers between your food and the freezer!

My second pin, Frozen Yogurt Covered Strawberries, comes from my New Recipes to Try pinboard.  I got a few pounds of strawberries and decided to make some of these yummy treats for Valentine's Day.
They turned out pretty nice, really cold to eat, but tasty!  I had to sample one, give me some slack.  I live in Utah and strawberries are out of season, so I added a sugar topping to mine, it's optional and made them a tiny bit sticky, but it tasted better.  After experimenting with a few batches here's the easiest way to make these:
  1. Wash and quick freeze your berries on a cookie sheet
  2. Dip your frozen berries into a thick vanilla yogurt
  3. Act quickly and sprinkle white sugar to coat
  4. On a wax paper lined cookie sheet, refreeze
  5. After an hour or so, they can be bagged and saved for later
A couple of tips:  Pat your berries dry, assembly line your dipping to cookie sheet, and double bag your berries for their long term trip to the freezer.  And of course, work as quickly as possible!

Uses of Coconut Oil: Body, Part 1: Shaving Oil & Uses of Coconut Oil: Body, Part 2: Body Oil

I've been experimenting with the uses of coconut oil, and so far I've already tried coconut oil exfoliating face scrub and serious eye cream.  I like it so far, and with the eye cream I'll add a thickening agent to my next batch.  So trying coconut oil for other beauty uses hasn't been too much of a stretch.  My first pin comes from my Homemade or Natural Remedies pinboard, it's 52 ways to use coconut oil and I tried it instead of shaving cream.

My legs, I admit, are hairy.  Young age introduction to a razor combined with my Scottish genetics makes me a cactus if I go too long between shaving.  Plus, my skin is prone to razor burn, so I have to take extra care when I do shave.  Yes, I have waxed and tried Nair, but for now, shaving is what I can fit into my lifestyle.  No, there will not be a picture in this post!

I found that my skin was not irritated after shaving with the coconut oil, it behaved better than if I had used sensitive skin shaving cream, and didn't need any moisturizer after I toweled dry.

However, I learned a few things the hard way:  coconut oil is very messy in the shower and thick!  My razor and tub became very sticky and I'm glad that I soaped off before shaving, because when the coconut oil accidentally got in my bath poof ball it would no longer become sudsy with soap! A little goes a long way, it's easy to apply too much - normal shaving cream has a larger volume, so trying to eyeball a replacement lead to too much.

If you were on vacation at the beach or camping or on a long car trip, some situation where water isn't readily available or showering long enough to shave isn't an option I would suggest using coconut oil with a disposable razor or one about to be replaced.

My second pin is also from my Homemade or Natural Remedies pinboard, it's the many uses of coconut oil - tried by Jillee.  I love Jillee's blog: onegoodthingbyjillee.com!  Check her out!  Anyhoo, for my second part I used coconut oil for a week after each shower as a body oil.

I have very dry skin out here in the frozen desert, and being indoors with the heater going constantly in an already dry atmosphere, really makes my skin uncomfortable without some sort of moisturizer.  In my household we have to lotion after just hand washing, otherwise your knuckles and hands crack!

Trying the coconut oil as moisturizer, I admit, that while I didn't see any drastic difference in cellulite or stretch marks, made my skin feel great and it's zero scent was a plus.  I gave it about 5 minutes before getting dressed so as not to get oil on my clothes and learned after the first application that a little goes a long way!  I'm not sold on this over lotion or body creams though, for two reasons: I have yet to figure out which is more cost effective, and I'm worried that if I get some on my clothes it might not be able to come out of all fabrics.

***As a side note:  I have finished my 1 week trial of Dr. Oz Teeth Whitening, check it out!

Parmesan Meatloaf Recipe and Review

My pin came from my New Recipes to Try pinboard.  I am very skeptical about meatloaf, it's a loaf of meat, usually with ketchup and sometimes someone's mommy puts bacon on top.  So when I came across this Parmesan Meatloaf pin, it looked non-traditional enough to earn a second look, so I tucked it away for the Mister, who likes meatloaf.  Tonight was the night, the moment of truth, to try a new twist on the loaf of meat.

After reading on-line comments on the recipe I altered the cooking temperature to 375 and the baking time to 1 hour 45 minutes and baked it in an 8x8 pan, not a loaf.  I had to add more sauce and cheese to cover the area, but I think that it had a much better meat to sauce and cheese ratio.  Overall pretty tasty!

The Mister commented that while he never had a problem with ketchup on meatloaf, he enjoyed having the tomato sauce, and combined with the cheese and spices it had a fun Italian feel.

For all of those who follow a gluten-free diet, this recipe is definitely one to try!  For those who don't have such needs, just substitute regular bread crumbs for the gluten-free ones in the recipe.  Some quick substitutes for breadcrumbs: ground up Rice Chex cereal, ground up saltine crackers,  and toast or stale bread pulsed through the blender or food processor.

PS - use a food thermometer if you've got one!  It will help make sure you don't over cook your food!

Gluten-Free Parmesan Meatloaf
adapted from mommyimhungry.blogspot.com

1 lb ground turkey
1 lb ground beef
2 eggs
1/4 cup gluten free breadcrumbs
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1-2 cloves garlic, finely minced
1 small onion, grated
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
marinara pasta sauce to cover top of meatloaf
shredded Italian cheese blend to cover top of meatloaf
minced parsley for garnish
Bake at 375 Fº in greased pan for 1 hour 45 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 160 Fº.
Let rest 5-10 minutes before serving.

Wreath of the Month: Whimsical Cupcake Liner Indoor Wreath

My pin today comes from my Wreath pinboard.  It's a Whimsical Cupcake Linear Indoor Wreath.  It took just about an hour, my stupid accent took the longest time because I couldn't get it to work right, so it's optional.
Supplies:
8 inch foam wreath - from Dollar Tree (Hobby Lobby costs $5!)
100 cupcake liners
4-6 cupcake liners for accent
Do-dad for accent
Ribbon to wrap wreath and to hang
Glue gun and glue

First, wrap your wreath in ribbon.  I choose an outdoor ribbon, it was nice and wide and I got 25 yards for $5 at Wal-Mart.  I just overlapped the start and hot glued the end on the back of the wreath.

Second, take about 9 cupcake liners and bunch them together, it will look like a pompom or a carnation flower.

Third, make a blob of hot glue, smash your 9 cupcake liners in it, and hold it, until it sticks and is slightly cool.

Mine at 50 liners
Fourth, continue making liner pompoms all around the wreath, don't do your pompoms right next to each other, let them cool completely first, so leave a gap between them.

Fifth, now make smaller pompoms and fill in the gaps until you like it!

Sixth, make an accent of your choice, this took me the longest, and truthfully, I'm not satisfied with mine!

Seventh, attach ribbon to the back and hang!

Kimmy's Laundry Detergent

Part of my New Year's Resolution was to go green or natural when possible, I've already made the switch to using Orange Vinegar Cleaner and I just ran out of my laundry detergent.  In my Homemade or Natural Remedies pinboard there are a few options for homemade laundry detergent recipes, but I am very fortunate, my dear friend Kimmy gave me a sample of her own tried and true recipe!  So I won't have to make my detergent batch quite yet, I'll use up my sample and if my family ok's it, I'll just use her recipe.  Several families at church now use this detergent for it's cost effectiveness and it's cleaning power - Kimmy does professional catering and swears that this stuff gets out all kinds of kitchen and food spots.

Looks pretty, huh?
Kimmy's Laundry Detergent

  • 4 lbs. box of Borax
  • 4 lbs. box of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda
  • 1 box of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
  • 3 bars Fels-Naptha Soap, grated
  • 2 small containers Oxy Clean
  • 1 bottle Downy Fragrance Beads

***Oxy Clean and Downy is optional***

To use:

  • Add 1 Tablespoon for small and medium loads, add 2 Tablespoons for large or extra large loads.
  • Pour powder directly on top of wash.
  • Safe for he washers or regular because it is low sudsing.

Total cost for each batch, including optional ingredients: $37.00!  My friend Angela uses this detergent, for her family of six, doing at least one load of laundry a day, has reported that her batch lasts at least 10 months!  $3.70 or less a month for laundry soap!

I personally feel that if you make your own laundry detergent, powdered is the way to go, just so you don't have to do so much work and it lasts a great long time.  Plus it doesn't take up as much room as bottles of liquid detergent.

*On a related note:  instead of using Shout or Resolve, you can damping the stain and then rub a bar of Fels-Naptha soap into it.

*Fels-Naptha soap may be switched for Zote.

Free Valentine's Day Fonts

With Valentine's Day fast approaching Pinterest has provided a plethora of wonderful free font links for everything from cute-sy to romantic script to holiday symbols.  I love that now when I want something new for a church poster or sign-up sheet it only takes about 5 minutes to find, install, and use!  Before I would have to search through font sites and it would take too much effort!  Lazy, but true.  From my Fonts and Printables pinboard I downloaded several new fonts for our church's cookie exchange handout.  My top four pins (over 50 fonts!  too many to make individual links) are: Valentine's Day playful fonts and graphics14 Romantic fontsFonts for Valentine's and Love Letters, and 10 free Valentine fonts.  Happy typing!

Disneyland Countdown Chain

Today, my pin comes from my Family and Kid Activities pinboard, it's our family Disneyland Countdown Chain!  With a trip coming up I wanted a fun visual way to help the three year old get a sense of time and anticipation.

Every night before bed, we tear off one chain until we reach Minnie and that's when we get to go to her house at Disneyland!  The three year old was so excited by this!  And she was able to get the concept, she was telling the baby how tomorrow night we get to tear off one more and it's the white one tomorrow.

We have family by Disneyland that we'll be visiting, but I didn't want the three year old to assume that every time we visit our family that we automatically go to Disneyland, so the countdown overlaps when we leave - the last few chains will be torn off while on vacation.

For the next few weeks, most of the pins will be about Disneyland or Disney themed ideas, or ideas about packing and travel.
